Introduction |

| There are at least ten federal laws that protect the civil rights of people with disabilities. The goal of these laws is to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate in various aspects of society.
Some of these laws – such as the Air Carriers Access Act – are very specific and the name of the law directly relates to its purpose. Other laws – such as the Rehabilitation Act – are very broad and the name of the law doesn’t explain what it pertains to. Sometimes more than one law applies to a particular situation. For example, a privately owned, federally funded homeless shelter might have obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Fair Housing Act. In this course we will focus on four laws: the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, the Fair Housing Act and the Air Carriers Access Act. At the conclusion of the course you will be aware of the basic requirements and characteristics of these laws and understand which laws apply in different situations. We will also provide you with a framework for identifying what laws apply to the many unique situations you may encounter. We have also included a brief overview of the other major disability rights laws. But first, let's meet Sally and Sam. |
